Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, currently detained under the National Security Act (NSA), is advocating for an independent judicial investigation into the deaths of four individuals, including a former soldier, during protests in Leh.
The protests, which took place on September 24, escalated into violence as demonstrators demanded the restoration of statehood for Ladakh and the implementation of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Wangchuk's Appeals
Wangchuk has urged the people of Ladakh to maintain peace and unity, encouraging them to continue their struggle through non-violence as advocated by Mahatma Gandhi. This message was conveyed through his brother Tsetan Dorje Leh and lawyer Mustafa Haji, who visited him in Jodhpur Central Jail. He expressed his willingness to remain incarcerated until a judicial inquiry is initiated.

A Ramon Magsaysay Award recipient, Wangchuk has also expressed support for the demands of the 'Supreme Body' and the 'Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA)' for the restoration of the Sixth Schedule and statehood. He stated, 'I wholeheartedly support any steps taken by the Supreme Body in the interest of Ladakh.'
Wangchuk reassured that he is both physically and mentally well. He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and offered prayers for the injured and those who have been arrested.

Both the 'Supreme Body' and KDA have distanced themselves from the Ministry of Home Affairs talks scheduled for October 6. Their primary demands include a judicial investigation into the killings and the unconditional release of all detainees, including Wangchuk.
On Monday, the Supreme Court will hear a petition filed by Wangchuk's wife, Geetanjali J. Angmo, challenging his detention under the NSA and seeking his release.
